Sportsmanship & Competition

Encouraging a fully-rounded approach to education, sport is very much a part of life for every pupil at Pembroke House, regardless of ability.

Our pupils participate fully in our sporting activities, learning to mix a healthy, competitive instinct with good sportsmanship, while also building stamina, drive and confidence.

As major sports, the boys play rugby, cricket and hockey; whilst the girls play rounders, netball and hockey.  All children also swim and participate in athletics.

Our excellent facilities and the secure, rural location of the school allow us to offer a outstanding range of additional sports, including:

  • sailing
  • squash
  • tennis
  • football
  • tap dancing
  • horse-riding
  • ballet
  • gymnastics
  • golf
  • badminton
  • swimming
  • taekwondo
  • athletics
  • cross-country
  • shooting

At Pembroke House there are many opportunities to represent the school in competitive sport and we do exceptionally well in this area.

We are a small school, which plays to our advantage enabling us to give talented children the coaching they need to perform to the very best of their abilities.  It also give children who might be overlooked in a bigger school a chance to play in matches.

Pembroke House is proud of its excellent sports record - and not only in terms of results.  Good manners, sportsmanship, tidy appearance and real effort are all important qualities on the Sports Field.  Team and individual sports are played against other prep schools around Kenya, both at home and away and Pembroke parents often drive (or fly) considerable distances to support matches.  The fixtures are played at under-9, under-11 and under-13 level.

Inter-house sports are also an integral part of every term and open days when there is inter-house athletics in the Christmas term, swimming in the Lent term and the well-attended Ndume 7's in the Trinity term, where preparatory schools from all over Kenya send young teams to participate in this popular 7-a-side rugby tournament for under-11's and under 13's.  There is a system of colours and other awards.

Many seniors also get the chance to participate in sporting tours, both within Kenya and overseas.

All staff in charge of teams often say that one of their fondest memories is coaching their teams and that they relish the excitement and challenge.
