PROGRAMMES FUNDED

Such is the urgent need for capital development that the majority of funds raised to date have been expended as follows, rather than being used to establish the endowment:

  • Two hard tennis courts were built and a tennis machine donated in 2002. These were made possible mainly due to a Legacy donated by the late of Cyril Widgery in 2001. The annual tennis tournament for the Widgery Cup is always held on the Sunday after the Pembroke Ndume 7-a-sides. This keenly fought competition consists of teams with one child and one adult and has produced some fine tennis. The winners are usually those that are best able to defy the effects of a huge curry lunch, and copious drafts of Pimms, with non-alcoholic Widgery Fizz for the children. This generous donation set the pace for the Foundation to undertake more traditional fund raising. Cost: Shs 3.0m (£25,000)

  • The V-sat internet link was a sudden request by the school when email and internet access proved the most reliable form of communication for the school and particularly for parents. The telephone system which was the current alternative became extremely unreliable. Internet access also enables the school to access a range of educational and social programmes. Cost: Shs 0.65m(£ 5,410)

  • Bursaries to assist parents who find it hard to meet the school fees. A full annual fee was contributed annually towards the bursary fund administered by the school. Shs 1.7m. ( £14,160)

  • Christina Chapel. To commemorate 75 years since the Schools founding and during the chapel expansion, PHF contributed Shs 0.1m (£ 850) towards the extension.

  • Improving washing and lavatory facilities for benefit of parents camping in forestry area Shs 0.2m (£1,650)

  • Moveable theatre in Big Hall, 2006. In spite of its wonderful atmosphere and tradition, the locker room eventually became just too small for theatre productions, so a one-off raffle was organised to raise Shs 0.5m (£4150) which paid for platforms for seats which enables the audience to obtain a good view throughout the auditorium. Walls were strengthened and curtains and a lighting system were added. This contribution has enabled more use to be made of Big Hall.

  • Two computers and a projector were paid for in 2006 Shs 0.18m (£1,500)

  • Music School, 2007. This was a major project to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the school. Shs 4.5m ( £ 37,500) was paid for the Music School. With its pale stone dug from nearby quarries this excellent building mirrors the stone used in the original school building and the new facing of the Christina Chapel, so is very much in keeping with the original concept. This new music school has resulted in many more children playing musical instruments.

  • Foundation Flats. In 2009 the Foundation was the largest contributor to the building of the Foundation flats. These are universally acclaimed as excellent accommodation by those teachers lucky enough to live in them. As some teachers live in rented accommodation, these flats will save the school Shs 1 m annually in rent. Shs 5.5m (£45,830) was donated.

  • Total: Shs 16.33 m or £136,050

OUR NEXT PROJECTS:

The immediate targets are a Design and Technology centre, and a purpose built theatre. D & T is an ideal subject for the development of practical and artistic talents and is becoming an increasingly popular subject in Kenya and worldwide. The theatre will do much to complement the Music school and contribute to furthering the theatrical side of children's lives.
